Chapter fourteen

Strange Mechanics

I left the bakery, scones in hand, and debated eating them in the car. I settled on gobbling down one quickly and then saving the other for home. I wasn’t disappointed. The chocolate of the scone was the melt in your mouth kind with just the right hint of peppermint throughout. Wow, Jaren knew his stuff when it came to baking. Maybe I’d get a discount on the treats for sharing the shop space.

With the scone downed and my stomach less grumbly, I headed to the local mechanic’s shop to find out if they could tow my coffee truck and give me an estimate on what it would take to get her in running shape. Hopefully, the dollar amount wouldn’t be too large.

I parked in front of the small shop and debated where I should walk in. There was a door on the garage shop, but I didn’t see an attached office or anything. Shrugging, I got out and made my way to the door. The hinges creaked as I pushed it open. I perked up once I saw a stairway in the garage and a little sign with an arrow that said office.

I climbed the wobbly steps until I emerged in another small room with a couple chairs and a desk. Behind the desk sat a woman somewhere in her twenties, and I had to do a double-take. She was stunning. I’d never seen anyone look so lovely in a plaid flannel shirt, but somehow, she made it work with her raven hair and red-tinted lips.

“Hi. Haven’t seen you around before.” She tilted her head, giving me a once-over. I suddenly felt underdressed in my hoodie and jeans, which was ridiculous since she was in flannel.

“Just moved to town. I was hoping I could get an estimate on a tow and diagnostic for a coffee truck I’m looking to get running.”

“Well, the tow is a flat seventy-five dollar fee for residents. The diagnostic could run you anywhere from fifty to around three hundred fifty dollars, depending on how bad off it is. Do you have any idea on the condition of your truck?”

I chewed my lower lip. “Well, it looks pretty rusty in some places and doesn’t run.”

“Hmm.” She flipped through a magazine, hardly giving me a glance. “I’d estimate on the higher end, then.”

My stomach clenched into knots. I knew it would cost a bit for the diagnostic, but three hundred fifty dollars was more than I’d expected.

“Do you want it towed?” She glanced up, pinning me in a stare.

“Um, would you accept payment on Friday?”

“Sorry, no can do.”

I nodded. “Sure. I guess I’ll come back, then.”

“You do that.”

I narrowed my eyes at the dark-haired woman for all the good it did me. She was completely turned away from me now, flipping through her magazine and pretending I didn’t exist. I wanted to call her out on her rudeness, but I’d just moved here, and making waves didn’t seem like the thing I should start out doing.
